Process of obtaining the Model Approval in India
Model Approval process
To issue a Model Approval Certificate, the Legal Metrology Department has methods that differ based on whether the applicant is an importer or a manufacturer:
Manufacturer's process
- Gather the required documents
- Fill out the application form
- Submit the application
- Submit the documents & product sample
- Pay the model approval fees
- Department conducts an initial inspection
- Forward sample for testing
- Obtain the Legal Metrology Certificate
If the applicant is a manufacturer, the product has to go through mandatory testing by the Directorate General of the Legal Metrology Department. the steps of it are as follows:
- Gather the required documents.
- Fill out the application form. Submit the duly filled application form, alongside the documents and a sample of the product, to the Legal
- Metrology department.
- Pay the model approval fees
- The department would conduct an initial inspection of the documents before forwarding the sample to Directorate-General for testing.
- If the product fits the regulatory requirements of the Legal Metrology Department, you'll obtain the Legal Metrology Certificate.
Importer's Process
If the applicant is an importer, product testing is not required:
- Gather the required documents.
- Fill out the application form.
- Submit the duly filled application form, alongside the documents and a sample of the product, to the Legal Metrology department.
- Pay the model approval fees
- The department would conduct an initial inspection of the documents.
- If no errors have been made from your end, you'll obtain the model approval certificate.
Penalty for failure to get model approved
If anyone fails or omits to submit a model of any weight or measure for approval will be punished with a fine. This fine can extend to twenty thousand rupees. Again, for the second or subsequent offence(s), the Authority can imprison the person for a term which can extend to one year and also with fine.
